Toddlers program

Class overview

Our two-year-old program is designed to challenge and build your child’s social, physical, intellectual and spiritual abilities through a variety of different activities. Our schedule is filled with fun activities, stimulating art projects, detailed learning centers, and age appropriate curriculum, which all work together to help develop motor skills and encourage learning.

Curriculum

In our 2 year old classroom our day consists of teacher directed activities, table top toys, an indoor free play, outside playtime, naptime, and mealtimes. Our activities includes: Music, Art, Story time, Science activities, Gross & Fine motor activities & Water & Sand play. A weekly lesson plan is posted on the bulletin board outside our classroom door.

Alphabet

  • Introduce and begin to recognize letters

Arts & Crafts

  • Simple crafts are encouraged with a variety of materials

Bible

  • Basic Bible stories
  • Bible songs

Colors

  • Recognize 9 basic colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple, brown, black and white

Fine Motor Skills

  • Improve hand coordination through play using a variety of materials: play dough, puzzles, scissors, finger plays, art projects, songs and more

Gross Motor Skills

  • Improve large motor skills with directed physical activities such as: running, jumping, hopping, climbing and more. Increase child’s awareness of body parts

Language Arts

  • Improve language skills through circle time, songs, play, listening and discussing stories and more

Numbers and Math

  • Introduce and begin to recognize numbers 1-10 through games, songs and hands on activities
  • Sorting

Self-Help Skills

  • Pulling up and down their pants
  • Drinking from a cup without a lid
  • Putting on/off their coat
  • Washing hands
  • Putting on/off their shoes
  • Using their words Using fork/spoon

Science

  • Introduce concepts about weather (wind, rain, snow, sun) and temperature and the relationship to clothing
  • Introduce characteristics of seasons (flowers, leaves, seasonal activities) and holidays

Shapes

  • Begin to recognize 8 basic shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, star, diamond and octagon
 

Toilet Training

Toilet training is an important part of a child’s life. At Heritage our 2 year old class is the only class in which we potty train. Although you child is not required to be toilet trained, to be in this class, promotion into the Wee-School program will be determined based upon this skill.

I wish we could say that there is a magic age that tells us when a child is ready to be toilet trained, but there isn’t.  There are however some guidelines that can help us make that determination though.  When your child exhibits these qualities within the classroom on a regular basis, we will be happy to work with you towards helping your child become toilet trained.  The guidelines we follow are listed below.  

  • Child has bladder and bowel control for 2 to 3 hours at a time.
  • Child is able to dress and undress them self.
  • Child is able to follow simple verbal instructions
  • Child asks to use the toilet 1 to 2 minutes prior to needing to go.
  • Child dislikes being in soiled diapers
  • Child shows sincere interest in using the toilet.
