Pre-kindergarten-program

Class overview

At Heritage Christian Daycare & Learning Center a new world of learning opens up in our Pre-Kindergarten program. This is the year, in your child’s life, that he or she begins to expand on skills critical to their future academic success. This is why we provide a well-balanced curriculum to address the needs of the whole child. Not only are academic needs addressed, but emotional, social, and spiritual development is given high priority as well. It is this “whole child” approach that has allowed our children to reach success both here in our program and later when they start Kindergarten. At Heritage our teachers’ primary goal is helping your child’s development.

Our Curriculum Focuses on

Our classroom is ‘center based’ with theme related activities in learning centers designed to encourage children’s cognitive, social, emotional and physical and spiritual development. The curriculum focuses on language arts and literacy, mathematics, science, social studies and character education. Activities in our classroom include: 

  • Identifying upper and lower case letters
  • Identifying letter sounds
  • Begins to add, subtract and estimate
  • Dramatic play
  • Discovering animals in their natural habitats through field trips
  • Learns about nutrition, safety, geography, different cultures,
  • Learns about compassion
  • Increased attention span and ability to focus
  • Enhanced social skills with peers and adults

Concept Taught

ALPHABET AND WRITING

  • Recognizes upper and lower case alphabets
  • Holds a pencil, marker and crayon correctly
  • Develops fine motor skills by using materials such as play dough, scissors, writing utensils, Legos, puzzles, etc.

ART

  • Uses a variety of art materials such as crayons, tempera paint, watercolor paint, colored pencils, markers, art chalk, clay, Glue, tissue paper, etc.

BIBLE

  • Develops an understanding of God through prayer, bible stories and songs

NUMBER AND MATH

  • Patterns: AB, AABB, ABC
  • Sizes: Small, medium, large
  • Shapes: Square, rectangle, circle, oval, star, triangle, heart, octagon, pentagon
  • Matching: Symbols, shapes, patterns, etc.
  • Same and different, more and less

READING

  • Answers questions about stories
  • Repeats simple nursery rhymes and finger plays
  • Builds new vocabulary
  • Builds listening skills

SCIENCE

  • Explores science tools such as magnets, prisms, magnifying glasses, etc.
  • Observes insect life
  • Observes plant growth
  • Identifies basic colors and explores color mixing
  • Explores the world with their five senses
  • Investigates animals, the homes they live in and the food they eat

GROSS MOTOR DEVELOPMENT

  • Participates in movement songs and dances
  • Uses scarves, rhythm sticks and bean bags to practice rhythms
  • Act out the movements and sounds of animals
  • Participates in dramatic play
  • Dramatize familiar stories

FINE MOTOR DEVELOPMENT

  • Cutting along a line continuously
  • Coloring inside the lines.
  • Coloring an entire picture.
  • Writing their name.
  • Tracing on a line with control.

SOCIAL SKILLS / DAILY ROUTINE

  • Practices problem-solving skills in social situations
  • Practice using manners: please, thank you, excuse me, and table manners
  • Takes care of his/her own basic needs: clean up, fasten clothing, uses tissue as needed, etc.
